Her diet consists of W/D dry with some W/D canned mixed in.
She still eats W/D dry but no longer any of the canned. Instead, I started a little "homecooking" -- mostly boiled chicken, veggies, and a little barley. Pippin, another bichon. He is also a little over 12 years old, neutered since puppyhood, and dx around June of this year. Slowly getting him regulated on the Humulin L--currently at 8 units/bid, but I think he will need one or two more small increases. Pippin is eating U/D, another prescription diet because of a history of calcium oxalate bladder stones. He also gets some of the boiled chicken and veggie mix. The two dogs are not related in any way. Neither has ever had any cortisone, steroids, prednisone, etc. Regular annual booster shots and rabies vaccines every other year due to state law. that Raffi's overall health, behavior and activity level are an integral

When Jasmine, my Siamese cat, began to lose weight, became listless and lethargic and seemed to be confused I took her to the vet. He ran tests, poked and prodded and ran more tests. She was in a heated cage with oxygen being pumped in because she was so sick. He told me she was diabetic and within an hour of her first insulin shot, she had perked up and was demanding food. Her weight had dropped to 4 lbs and even though she was a small cat to begin with, she has only gained up to 5 lbs. None of our four cats get shots, because they are indoor, and we fear the

unnecessary, since all four are always indoors.We don't know his birthday.
Chris came to us when he was about four. We were his fourth home
that year -- he'd been found in the streets, a stray, and passed from home

His low keeps getting lower (around 170 right now) All the highs and lows have started to come down steadily after 3 days of this new dosage (he went too low -50-and high-485-on 3.5 units PZI bid). I do home-testing with the FastTake Glucometer, and it has worked very well for me and Boots. I've learned from Boots and home-testing that it takes him 1 to 2 weeks to settle in to a new dosage amount, where his numbers start to flatten out, and to always try to avoid hypoglycemia (I used Karo syrup, and it worked very well) . Hewas on Ultralente for 1 year different dosages and types of food, to try and find a combo that would work for him. I have now got him on PZI beef. It is obtained from my vet (Summit Pharm.) and again we are going up the ladderhopefully to success. He is now on DM food (was originally on Medical Cal dryfood since age 4 utd). Once diagnosed was switched to W/D dry & moist no success so now on DM moist. He was on two shots a day with ultralente, but now on one shot with PZI (currently on 14 units) at (5:30AM). He eats at 5:15 am/pm and a small snack of w/d before bed. He is 15.5 lbs (down from 17) I never left food out for my cats because Ebber eats out of boredom. He has been on diet food most of his life but I was never able to get him to lose weight. He only gets one small can of food each day 1/2 morning and 1/2 supper. Night snack consists of less than 1/4 cup of dry. As he was recovering, we got a dx of diabetes in late May. He has an adrenal tumor which keeps his gland from producing any steroids, so he has to take prednisone and florinef every day to stay alive. This probably brought on the diabetes. He now eats boiled chicken breasts, broth and WD kibble with sea salt to help electrolytes. His appetite is good lately, and he has gained .8 lb. this month. dx diabetes 7/19/01 DOB: 1/90 Not sure ~~We think he was a stray. We adopted him from a Poodle Protection Agency 9/00. He had most of his teeth pulled 7/31/00 and has never barked. He truly looks like a "little lamb". It has been a roller-coaster ride since he was first diagnosed with diabetes. During his first year, he was on 14 units of Humulin U 1x daily with w/d (then r/d). After experiencing so many "attacks" during this time, we finally found The www.petdiabetes.com (8/1/02) and learned how to home test. We are still struggling to get him regulated but he is now (9/3/02) on Humulin U 2x daily -5 units am & 4 units pm along with 1/2 can Science Diet Canine Growth 2x daily. We think he is blind in one eye and the other one seems to be gradually getting worse. We are thinking of switching him from U to N or L to see if that brings him down from the 300 bg's. |
